在上面的报道中，smartphone就是我们现在流行的“智能手机”。Smart在该词中的意思是“智能的，智能化的”。我们现在有smart card (智能卡)，smart dust(智能微尘——具有电脑功能的超微型传感器)等。

和smart相结合的词多和“聪明、灵巧”相关，如smart drink是“智慧饮料”(有益智功效的混合饮料)，smart mob是“聪明暴民、快闪族(指通过手机或其他方式联系后聚集、集体行动等的一群人)”。但是有的和smart沾边的词就没那么幸运了，像smart-ass是“自作聪明的人”，而smart mouth则是“说话放肆的人”。

另外，smart还可以解释为“时髦的”，例如 smart casual就是“休闲且时髦的服饰”。
