go through the motions

I don’t want to do this, but I think I’d better go through the motions.

I go to work each day just to go through the motions and collect a paycheck.

Cook the book

If they looked over the books there would be no hiding the fact that she had cooked the books.

Pay lip service to something

They pay lip service to education, but don’t work for better schools

It’s not enough to pay lip service to that project. We have to do somehing about it.

Pull the wool over someone’s eyes

He said you always try to pull the wool over his eyes. He thinks you are dishonest.

They tried to pull the wool over our eyes with this report, but we know the results are based on wrong information.
